Further Troubleshooting The Tape Head
Verify the front and/or rear of the case:
Overlap is ok
No loops
Flaps are closed properly
First check the physical position of the case between the side belts. When the case is set too much up between the side belts there are several adjustments which can be checked:
Height blank magazine. When the magazine is adjusted too far up, it may cause incorrect folding of the outer flaps. The outer flap locks itself in the outer flap folders because the blank is held in the incorrect position by the suction frame. When the case is pushed into the side belts it cannot correct itself anymore and ends up too far up in between the side belts. This results in bad taping and or cutting.
Width side belts. When the side belts are set up too narrow, the outer flap folders are set too narrow as well. It may cause incorrect folding of the outer flaps. The outer flap folders do not hold or lock the outer flaps as they should. This will result in a case running into the side belts at the wrong height. This results in bad taping and or cutting.
Bottom folding plate. Check the position/height of the bottom folding plate. It should be a corrugated thickness below the folding section. Put a piece of corrugated on the bottom folding plate. Put a level on top as shown in the pic below. Check the alignment and re-adjust the bottom folding plate if needed.
Keep the sponge lubricated
The knife is protected by a red cover. Within this cover is a sponge. This sponge must be lubricated frequently. At least every change roll of tape. Remember, the problems are not always related to the tape head. Overall adjustments of the case erector can have an influence on the performance of the tape head.
